Video Monitoring Services: The Systems Behind Them

It covers two different things. One is the camera system: cameras, recorders or hosted storage, the VMS, and the network that carries video. The other is people watching that video, either your own security staff or a third-party remote monitoring provider. IPS designs, installs, and supports the system. We also monitor device health through our NOC. We do not staff live video monitoring or dispatch response.

In our work it's usually medium and large organizations and government agencies with a security team, a compliance reason, or a lot of property to cover. Industries we serve include education, healthcare, federal and municipal government, manufacturing, casinos, banking and finance, commercial real estate, hospitality, retail, and sports and entertainment venues. The right design depends far more on who will watch the video than on the industry.

Yes. We start with a risk and needs assessment, then design and install with our certified, trained installation team. The mistake we see most is buying cameras before deciding what each camera must do. A camera meant to identify a face at a door needs different placement and resolution than one meant to show general activity in a lot. Decide that first, and the camera count usually changes.

Device health. Probes and an IPS application on your video server check every camera, recorder, and server every 60 seconds, and apply cybersecurity controls. Data goes outbound over TLS to IPS's secure AWS server. Some cameras are restarted automatically; if that fails, a service ticket opens under your maintenance contract. The NOC does not watch live video, respond to intruders, or contact police or fire.

It depends on bandwidth, retention, and who runs your servers. Our hosted and managed services store video with certified data center partners, spread cost over the lifecycle, and keep software current. The trade-off is upload bandwidth. If you plan to have a remote monitoring provider view many streams, or want long retention, work out the bandwidth and storage math with IT before you commit.

Yes, and for staffed monitoring it's one of the most useful links. When a door is forced or held open, the operator should see the camera on that door without searching for it. That only works if the door-to-camera mapping is set up during commissioning and kept current when doors or cameras change. It's a small task that often gets skipped.

IPS does not provide this service, but we design systems that feed it. Ask whether the monitoring center is UL-listed, what redundancy it has, and how operators handle false alarms. Ask which events trigger a live review, and how they verify before calling police. Also confirm what your cameras and network must support. Those answers shape camera placement and analytics settings, so get them before design is final.

Pricing follows a scope review or site assessment and is based on the number of devices and the services required. Variable work is billed time-and-material at then-prevailing rates, and after-hours or shutdown scheduling may add charges.
